Can you keep a tarpon you catch in Boca Grande?
No. Tarpon are catch and release only. You fight the fish, get your photos and let it go. A tarpon under 40 inches can be lifted briefly from the water for a picture. Anything over 40 inches stays in the water for the photo and the release.
What it actually depends on
The size of the fish. The 40 inch line decides how the photo happens. Under it, a short lift. Over it, the fish never leaves the water.
Where you are fishing. Most tarpon gather in Boca Grande Pass. The trips also sight fish for rolling tarpon in the shallow water of Gasparilla Sound and Charlotte Harbor.
Whether you want fish for dinner. Then book a different trip. Inshore and nearshore charters let you keep fish that are in season and legal size, and grouper and snapper off the nearshore reefs are good eating.
Why people still travel for a fish they release
Boca Grande has long been called the Tarpon Capital of the World, and anglers come from across the US for one reason. A tarpon can weigh up to 250 lbs and measure 4 to 8 ft. When it is hooked it leaps, thrashes and fights for a long time.
That fight is the trophy. It is also why so many anglers come back for tarpon every year, and why dates go quickly.
The trip includes the fishing license, live bait and lures, Shimano gear and life vests. Your job is to hold on.
