Is a Boca Grande fishing charter a good idea with kids?
Yes, and the trip you choose matters more than how old they are. The 4 hour inshore charter is the one families with small children book most: shallow water, short runs, and fish that keep the rods busy. Every guest is covered by the boat’s fishing license, life vests are on board, and the charter is private, so the boat holds your group and nobody else.
What it actually depends on
How long they will stay happy on a boat. Four hours is the usual answer for small children. The 6 hour inshore trip gives more time to catch more fish, which suits kids who already like it.
Whether they want to fish at all. Some kids would rather watch dolphins than hold a rod. The 2 hour sunset cruise is the shorter, calmer option, and the shorter tours are the ones meant for families with young children. See the dolphin and sunset tours.
How big a fight they are ready for. Many families do take the tarpon charters. Be honest about your crew, though. A tarpon can weigh up to 250 lbs, leaps clear of the water, and fights for a long time.
What a family morning on the flats looks like
Inshore trips fish the Charlotte Harbor area. In the summer months that means redfish and snook under the mangroves. The rest of the year it means the open water flats, where the water is usually less than 2 foot deep.
You do not need to own any gear. Live bait, lures, Shimano rods, reels and tackle are on the boat, with one ice chest for the fish and another for bottled water. Fish that are in season and a legal size are yours to keep, and they get cleaned back at the docks.
Pickup is flexible. There are several spots around Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor, and the captain will pick the one that suits you. There are no split charters, so you are never sharing the day with strangers.
Common questions
Do kids need a fishing license?
No. The charter carries a blanket fishing license that covers every guest on board, adults and children alike.
What should we bring?
Sunblock, long sleeve clothing, a hat for everyone, polarized sunglasses, and your own drinks and snacks. Water and ice are provided.
What happens if the weather turns?
Rain alone does not usually cancel a charter. If the captain judges conditions unsafe, you are told, and the trip is rebooked for the earliest date that works for both of you. If rebooking is not possible, the deposit is refunded in full.
What about seasickness?
It is always possible on the water. Skip foods that upset your stomach the morning of the trip. Many guests take Dramamine the night before and again that morning.
